Toledo, Segovia and Ávila are destinations that work all year round. But not all seasons are equal: the weather, number of tourists and availability of activities vary a great deal from one season to another. If you want to get the most out of your day trip, this guide will help you choose the perfect moment.
Spring (March–May): the best time overall
Spring is, without doubt, the best time to visit all three destinations. Temperatures range from 15 to 22°C during the day, perfect for walking cobblestone historic centres for hours on end. The Castilian landscape is at its finest: green fields, almond trees in blossom and a light that makes every photo look great.
Toledo in spring is especially magical: the vegetation along the Tagus River complements the views from the Mirador del Valle. Holy Week (when it falls) is a unique spectacle in Toledo, though you should prepare for larger visitor numbers.
Segovia in April and May has the most pleasant temperatures of the year for exploring the Aqueduct and climbing the Alcázar. Ávila in spring shines with perfect light on the walls and the Castilian countryside all around.
Our verdict: if you can choose, go between April and June. It's the perfect window.
Summer (June–August): hot but doable with an early start
Summer is the peak tourist season, and also the hottest. Toledo can exceed 38–40°C in July and August. The cobblestone streets of the old town absorb the heat and walking at midday is exhausting.
If you visit in summer, the key is to leave early. With the 9:30am departure from the Neptune Fountain you reach Toledo around 10:30am, before the hottest hours. By 2pm you'll have seen the best of the city: the Toledo Express heads back to Madrid around 2:30pm and, with the Toledo Experience, you still have time for lunch and a rest in the old town.
Segovia is more manageable than Toledo in summer thanks to its altitude (1,000 m). Temperatures are usually 3–5°C cooler. Ávila is the freshest of the three: at 1,130 metres above sea level, it's Spain's highest provincial capital and in summer has very pleasant temperatures (20–28°C).
Tip: in July and August, book tours and tickets several days in advance. Demand is at its peak.
Autumn (September–November): the second best time
September and October are an excellent alternative to spring. The autumn light in Toledo is spectacular, especially at sunset when the sun illuminates the Cathedral and Alcázar from the Mirador del Valle. Temperatures are pleasant (17–25°C in September, 12–18°C in October) and tourists begin to thin out considerably.
Segovia in autumn offers one of its finest spectacles: the morning mist that surrounds the Aqueduct on October mornings is an image hard to forget. Ávila in autumn has beautiful colours in the surrounding Castilian countryside.
November is already colder and the days are short, but Toledo and Segovia remain magnetic with fewer tourists and lower prices. If you like peace and quiet and an authentic atmosphere, November is an underrated and highly recommended month.
Winter (December–February): peaceful, indoors and very photogenic
Winter is the least busy time of year, but it has its own appeal. Toledo's Cathedral, Segovia's Alcázar and Ávila's Basilica are indoor visits just as enjoyable in the cold. Christmas in Toledo is particularly beautiful: it becomes Spain's oldest living nativity scene.
If it snows — something that happens in Segovia and Ávila several times each winter thanks to their altitude — the images are like postcards. The snow-covered Alcázar of Segovia and the white-dusted skyline of Ávila are sights worth the trip in themselves.
Winter temperatures: Toledo 4–12°C, Segovia 0–9°C, Ávila -2–8°C. Wrap up warm and you'll have a truly unique experience.
Summary: when to visit each destination?
Toledo: best in spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October). Avoid August if you can — the heat is extreme. Holy Week has a unique atmosphere but large crowds.
Segovia: perfect in spring and autumn, and surprisingly beautiful in winter with snow. Summer is manageable due to the altitude. The suckling pig tastes equally good in every season.
Ávila: the best summer temperatures of the three (ideal if visiting in July or August). Spectacular in spring and autumn. In winter with snow on the medieval walls, it's a one-of-a-kind experience in Spain.
