The city sits 70 km south of the capital, and you can reach the train station in 33 minutes on the AVE high-speed train from Atocha. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986, the old town packs more than 2,500 years of Roman, Visigoth, Arab, Jewish and Christian history into a walled hill above the Tagus River. You will find Toledo Cathedral standing in the centre, the Jewish Quarter winding down to the synagogues, and quiet medieval squares around every corner: this is what makes Toledo the City of Three Cultures.
From Madrid, you can choose between five guided day trips depending on how long you want to spend in the city. Toledo is compact enough that you can cover the essential sights on foot in a single day. Here is what you can fit into a day trip from Madrid, ordered roughly from morning to late afternoon.
Wind down the narrow cobbled streets of the Judería, where Sephardic families lived for centuries. You will find small craft shops, hidden patios and quiet views of the Tagus around every bend.
Step inside one of the oldest standing synagogues in Europe — a 12th-century space with white horseshoe arches that doubles as the symbol of the three-culture city.
Walk into Plaza del Ayuntamiento to see Toledo's main monument from the outside. If you want to go inside, our Toledo Complete tour includes a guided visit, and on Toledo Experience you can add one when booking (€55 in total per adult); otherwise you can buy a ticket on the spot (around €12).
The square fortress at the top of the hill dominates the skyline. Today it houses the Army Museum, and the terraces are one of the best free viewpoints over the river gorge.
Make sure to visit the Church of Santo Tomé, home to El Greco's Burial of the Count of Orgaz — considered one of the great works of 16th-century Spanish painting.

Good to know: a traditional sword-making workshop (30 min) is included on all three Toledo tours and on Segovia & Toledo, at no extra cost. Chinchón, Aranjuez & Toledo has no workshop but includes admission to the Royal Palace of Aranjuez.

Renfe AVE from Atocha station to Toledo train station. From the train station the old town is a 25-minute walk uphill, or you can take a local bus. Fastest option, but you will need to plan tickets, monument entries and lunch yourself. Fares typically run from €13 to €22 depending on how early you book.

Direct service from Plaza Elíptica bus station to Toledo. Cheaper than the train but slower; from the bus station you walk into the historic centre. A good fit if you are on a tight budget and have a full day to spend.

Was built in the 12th century and is one of the oldest standing synagogues in Europe. The five naves and horseshoe arches reflect the Mudéjar style at its purest.
Dates back to 999 AD and is the best-preserved Arab building in the city, raised in the Cordoban Caliphate style. A small but essential stop.

We recommend these months. Pleasant temperatures and the right light for walking the old town. Make sure to bring layers — mornings are still cool, especially in March and November.
July and August are very hot (35–40°C). If you travel in summer, we recommend the earliest departure to make the most of the cooler hours. Bring water, light clothing and a hat.
Toledo works well in winter because most of what you will want to see is indoors — synagogues, churches and museums. Fewer tourists and a more local atmosphere.

Toledo Complete (11h, €84) — one daily option
Meet 09:00 at San Bernardo 5 → departure 09:30 from Plaza de Neptuno → return 19:30 → arrival in Madrid 20:30. Includes guided entry inside Toledo Cathedral and a VIP wristband with priority access to 7 monuments.
Chinchón, Aranjuez & Toledo (11h 30min, from €69), Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays
Departure 09:00 from San Bernardo 5, Local 13 (Visitor Centre) → leaves Toledo 19:30 → arrival in Madrid around 20:30 at the Neptune Fountain. Guided walks in Chinchón, Aranjuez (with Royal Palace admission) and Toledo, plus 4 hours of free time in Toledo.
