Day trips from Madrid by train: Toledo and Segovia without a car

22 April 2026Trip Tours7 min read

Madrid has the advantage of being perfectly connected by train to two of the most spectacular destinations in Spain: Toledo and Segovia. With AVE or regional trains you can reach both cities in less than 30–45 minutes, without a car and without stress. In this article we explain how each route works and how to plan your day.

Important note: Ávila is also accessible by train from Madrid (Chamartín, approx. 1h15), but timetables are less frequent and logistics are more complex. Toledo and Segovia are the most convenient destinations to visit by train.

Madrid to Toledo by train: Spain's shortest high-speed route

The Madrid–Toledo route is one of the most remarkable on Spain's AVE network for its brevity: just 30 minutes on the high-speed train. It departs from Madrid Puerta de Atocha station (AVE/Avant platforms) and arrives at Toledo station, which is 20 minutes on foot or 5 minutes by taxi from the historic centre.

Timetables: trains run with variable frequency, generally 6 to 10 trains per day depending on the season, with the first around 6:50am and the last between 9:30pm and 10:30pm. It's essential to check exact timetables on the RENFE website and book in advance, especially on weekends and during high season.

Price: an AVE ticket Madrid–Toledo costs €13–20 per journey depending on how far in advance you book and availability. A return ticket (if bought together) can be more economical. Tip: always buy in advance — last-minute tickets can be twice the price.

From Toledo station to the historic centre: the walk from the station to the Bisagra Gate (entrance to the old town) is about 20 minutes via the Azarquiel bridge, perfectly pleasant. Alternatively, there are taxis, urban buses and Toledo's cable car (which goes to the Antequeruela neighbourhood, near the Alcázar).

Madrid to Segovia by train: AVE to Segovia-Guiomar

The Madrid–Segovia AVE takes just 27 minutes from Madrid Puerta de Atocha, but there's an important detail: the high-speed station is called Segovia–Guiomar and is 5 km from the historic centre, not in the city itself. From the station you'll need a taxi (5–10 minutes, around €8–10) or the shuttle bus that connects the station with the Plaza Mayor.

Price: AVE tickets Madrid–Segovia cost between €18 and €25 per journey. The bus from the station to the centre costs approximately €1.50.

Cheaper alternative — regional train: from Chamartín there's a regional train (media distancia) that stops at Segovia El Espinar and then Segovia's main station (much closer to the historic centre). It takes 1h50–2h10, but the arrival station in Segovia is a 10-minute walk from the Aqueduct. The price is around €7–9 per journey. For many travellers, this train is the best option combining price and convenience.

Tip: if you opt for the AVE to Segovia, also check the bus timetables from Madrid (Moncloa station). The Avanza bus takes 1h15 but arrives directly in the city centre and is cheaper (around €4.50 per journey).

Train vs. guided tour: which is better?

The train gives you total freedom: you can stay as long as you like, eat where you choose and move at your own pace. It's perfect if you already know the city or prefer to explore independently without a guide.

However, there are three situations where a guided tour clearly beats the train: if it's your first time in Toledo or Segovia and you want to understand what you're seeing, if you want monument tickets without queuing, or if you're travelling in a group and want someone to organise the day for you.

Our tours depart every morning from the Neptune Fountain in Madrid (10 minutes from Atocha), include air-conditioned coach transport, a certified bilingual guide and, depending on the tour, tickets to the main monuments. Prices start at €29 for the Toledo Express and €39 for full-day tours.

The third option — the best for some — is to travel by train and hire a local guide at the destination. In Toledo and Segovia there are private guides and walking tours from around €15–20 per person. That way you combine the flexibility of independent transport with the depth of an expert guide.
