How much does a day trip from Madrid cost? 2026 prices

The short answer: a day in Toledo on your own costs between €45 and €75 per person in 2026, adding up train or bus, two or three tickets and a set lunch. An organised day trip with transport and guide starts at €34. In Segovia and Ávila the sums are similar, and El Escorial and Aranjuez are the cheapest destinations of all.

Below is the breakdown, item by item and with the official 2026 prices, so you can decide with numbers how to organise your day. At the end there is a table with every destination and what each one costs on your own and with us.

Toledo on your own in 2026: transport, tickets and food

Transport: the Avant train from Atocha to Toledo takes 33 minutes and costs €12 to €16 each way depending on how far ahead you book, that is €24 to €32 return. The ALSA bus from Plaza Elíptica starts at €6.55 each way and takes 50 to 90 minutes depending on the route: about €13-14 return. To reach the Mirador del Valle viewpoint, city bus 71 costs €1.40.

Tickets: the Cathedral costs €12 (€8 reduced, €6 children); the Alcázar, with the Army Museum, €5 and free on Wednesday afternoons; Santo Tomé, with The Burial of the Count of Orgaz, €4; Santa María la Blanca €4 and San Juan de los Reyes €4. The tourist wristband gives access to seven monuments for €14 and pays off from the fourth one. A typical route (Cathedral, Santo Tomé and one more monument) adds up to €20.

Food: a set lunch in the old town is around €14-15. A marzipan and a coffee, €4-5 more. Realistic total on your own: €45-75 per person depending on whether you take the bus or the train and how many tickets you buy.

Segovia and Ávila on your own

Segovia: the high-speed train from Chamartín takes about 30 minutes, but it arrives at Segovia-Guiomar station, 6 kilometres from the centre, so you need to add city bus 11. The Avanza bus from Moncloa takes 1 h 15 to 1 h 20 and drops you in the centre. The Alcázar costs €7 (€10 with the tower climb) and is free for EU citizens on Tuesdays from 14:00 to 16:00; the Cathedral, €4 (€10 with the tower). Suckling pig, the dish everyone comes to try, is around €28-30 a portion, so lunch may be the biggest item of the day. Rough total: €45-70 per person.

Ávila: it is 113 kilometres away; the regional train takes 1 h 31 and the bus 1 h to 1 h 15. Admission to the walls costs €8 (€5 reduced) and is free on Tuesdays from 14:00 to 16:00. A set lunch is around €14. Rough total: €40-60 per person. Train and bus fares to Segovia and Ávila vary with booking lead time; allow €20-30 return as a guide figure.

El Escorial and Aranjuez: the cheapest

Both are on the Cercanías commuter network and admission to their main monument is free for EU and Latin American citizens on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons. El Escorial: Cercanías C-3 or C-8a for about €4 (zone C1), or buses 661 and 664 from Moncloa for €3; the Monastery costs €14 (€7 reduced). Aranjuez: Cercanías C-3 for about €4 (zone C2) or bus 423 for €3; the Royal Palace costs €9 (€4 reduced) and the Parterre and Island gardens are free. The on-your-own amounts add return transport, the usual tickets and a set lunch; they are approximate and vary with booking lead time and season. The day-trip amounts are the 2026 adult price and include transport from Madrid and a live guide in Spanish and English; tickets are included or optional as indicated.

Is the organised day trip worth it?

With the numbers in front of you, the difference is smaller than it looks. In Toledo, the return train (€24-32) already costs almost the same as the whole Toledo Express (€34), which includes the coach, the stop at the Mirador del Valle viewpoint and a guided walk through the old town. If you want the Cathedral, the Toledo Experience with the ticket comes to €55, against €12 for the ticket plus €24-32 for the train plus queuing time.

Where the day trip clearly wins is on the combinations: Toledo and Segovia, Ávila and Segovia or El Escorial, the Valley and Segovia in one day are impossible by public transport and expensive by hire car. And for the small, well-connected destinations, El Escorial or Aranjuez alone, going on your own is perfectly reasonable. You have every option at day trips from Madrid.

Toledo's Alcázar is free on Wednesday afternoons; Segovia's Alcázar and Ávila's walls on Tuesdays from 14:00 to 16:00; the Monastery of El Escorial and the Palace of Aranjuez on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons for EU and Latin American citizens. Two: in Toledo, if you plan to enter four monuments or more, the €14 wristband is cheaper than single tickets. Three: book the train weeks ahead or take the bus. Four: eat the set lunch and save the suckling pig for a special occasion. Five: if you travel as a family, the family tickets of the hop-on hop-off bus and the child and senior rates on our day trips (€5 less per person) bring the bill down.

Is there free cancellation?
