It is the question we get most often on WhatsApp: with one free day in Madrid, Toledo or Segovia? Both are World Heritage cities, both are under an hour away by train and both fit into a single day. But they are not the same trip, and choosing badly means a day of unexpected hills or three hours lost between stations and buses.
The short answer: Toledo if you want the densest history and monuments per square metre (cathedral, El Greco, synagogues, mosque, Jewish quarter) and do not mind walking uphill; Segovia if you prefer a more compact, flatter city with two icons you can see without paying (the Aqueduct and the Alcázar skyline) and the best lunch of your trip. And if you do not want to choose, there is a day trip that combines both. Below we break it down with 2026 figures.
Distance and travel time from Madrid
Toledo is about 70 km south of Madrid. The Avant train leaves from Atocha and takes 33 minutes; Toledo station is a 20-25 minute uphill walk from the old town (the Safont escalators help) or 5-10 minutes by taxi or city bus. The ALSA coach leaves from the Plaza Elíptica interchange, takes between 50 minutes and an hour and a half depending on the service, and costs from €6.55 each way.
Segovia is about 90 km to the north-west. The high-speed train leaves from Chamartín and takes about 30 minutes, but arrives at Segovia-Guiomar, 6 km from the centre: add city bus 11 to the Aqueduct (15-20 minutes) or a taxi. The Avanza coach leaves from Moncloa, takes 1 h 15 to 1 h 20 and drops you at the bus station, a 10-minute walk from the Aqueduct.
Door to door, Toledo wins by a little: the train leaves you in the city itself. In Segovia the train is very fast but you have to connect. With an organised day trip from Madrid the difference disappears: the coach drops you in the old town in both cities and the guide travels with you.
What to see in Toledo in one day
Toledo is a city of layers: Roman, Visigothic, Muslim, Jewish and Christian, packed into a medieval maze on a rock wrapped by the Tagus. One day is enough for the Cathedral (basic ticket €12), Santo Tomé with El Greco's Burial of the Count of Orgaz (€4), the Santa María la Blanca synagogue (€4), the Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes (€4) and the Alcázar with the Army Museum (€5, free on Wednesdays). The tourist wristband costs €14 and covers seven monuments, the Cathedral not included.
The price no ticket shows is the gradient: in Toledo you climb and descend all day. If you have limited mobility, a pushchair or older travellers with you, plan the route or let a guide do it. The panoramic view from the Mirador del Valle, across the river, is reached by city bus 71 (€1.40) or taxi.

What to see in Segovia in one day
Segovia comes down to three images: the Roman Aqueduct, the Gothic Cathedral and the Alcázar on its rocky spur. The Aqueduct is free and greets you on arrival; the Cathedral costs €4 (€10 with the tower climb); the Alcázar, €7 for the basic visit and €10 with the Tower of John II (EU citizens enter free on Tuesdays from 14:00 to 16:00, subject to capacity). In between, the Casa de los Picos, the Plaza Mayor and the Jewish quarter are a flat walk along Calle Real.
The other reason to pick Segovia is the table: roast suckling pig is around €28-30 a portion in the classic inns, and a set lunch menu costs about €14. And the photo everyone wants, the Alcázar floating above the valley, is taken from the Pradera de San Marcos, a 15-minute downhill walk from the castle.
You have the detailed route in what to see in Segovia in one day and the transport options in how to get from Madrid to Segovia.
What each one costs on your own and with a tour
Toledo on your own: the Avant costs €12-16 each way depending on how early you book (the coach, from €6.55), tickets add up to €20-30 if you enter three or four monuments (or €14 for the wristband plus €12 for the Cathedral) and a set lunch is around €13-15. Rough total: €55-80 per person, not counting the time spent finding your way.
Segovia on your own: the train price swings a lot with advance booking and the Avanza coach is cheaper but slower; add the city bus from Guiomar, €11-20 in tickets (Cathedral and Alcázar) and lunch, which goes up if you order the suckling pig. Rough total: €50-90 per person.
With us: the half-day Toledo Express costs €34 with transport and a guided walk; the full-day Toledo Experience, €39; the Toledo Full Day with tickets, €84 with the guided Cathedral and the seven-monument wristband. The full-day Segovia day trip costs €44 (€49 with the Alcázar ticket). All depart from Madrid, include the guided visit and can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before.
Toledo is for you if...
You care about history and art more than landscape: El Greco, the Cathedral, the three cultures. You want the maximum number of monuments in a day and hills do not scare you. You are travelling without a car and prefer a city where the station is in town. You only have half a day: the Toledo Express leaves at 9:30 and is back in Madrid at 15:30, and nobody offers that for Segovia.
Segovia is for you if...
You prefer a city you can grasp in an afternoon, with a flat stroll and two free icons. You travel with children, a pushchair or someone who walks slowly: Segovia is less tiring. You want a good lunch as part of the plan. A fairy-tale castle and a 2,000-year-old aqueduct appeal to you more than a Gothic cathedral. And on a clear day, the Guadarrama mountains in the background do the rest.
What if I do not want to choose? Toledo and Segovia in one day
On your own it is almost impossible: Toledo is south and Segovia north of Madrid, on different train lines, and you would spend the day in stations. By private coach it works, and it is our best-selling day trip: Toledo and Segovia in one day leaves at 8:45 from San Bernardo 5, gives the morning to Segovia (Aqueduct, guided walk and free time for lunch) and the afternoon to Toledo (guided walk and free time), and returns to Madrid at about 20:30. It costs €69 per adult, €79 with the Alcázar ticket, and lasts 11 hours and 45 minutes. A long day, but the one most people recommend.
Our verdict
If it is your first time in Spain and you can only do one, Toledo: it has the most to tell and is the easiest to reach. If you already know Toledo, or travel with children or someone who walks little, Segovia gives you a gentler day and a better lunch. And if you have the energy for a 12-hour day, combining both is the answer that removes the doubt. You can also compare the three big day trips in Toledo, Segovia or Ávila.
